Rehabilitation Techniques for Ankle Fractures
SHARE

An ankle fracture is a common injury affecting the lower leg and foot. The ankle carries the full weight of your body, so any break in its structure can disrupt daily activities and take time to heal properly. Learning how these injuries happen, as well as which treatments are available, may help you respond if you ever face one.

What Is an Ankle Fracture?

An ankle fracture is a break in one or more of the bones that form the ankle joint. Three bones are usually involved. The tibia, or shin bone, is the larger bone in the lower leg, and the fibula is the thinner bone that runs along the outer side of the lower leg. The talus sits between the heel and the leg bones, linking the foot to the rest of the limb. A fracture can affect any one of these bones or several at once, and the severity ranges from a small crack to multiple breaks.

Many ankle fractures result from sudden trauma, and sports activities are a frequent source. A break can happen when you step into a hole, land awkwardly, or twist the ankle with force. The injury may occur without warning, during ordinary movements that suddenly go wrong.

What Are the Symptoms?

People can report moderate to severe pain and find it difficult to put weight on the injured leg. Swelling and bruising around the ankle and foot are also common. These symptoms can resemble those of a sprain, which happens when ligaments stretch too far or tear. It is possible for a sprain and a fracture to occur together, and because they affect the same area, a professional evaluation may be necessary to tell them apart. A podiatrist typically examines the ankle and uses imaging tests, such as X-rays, to identify the injury.

What Does Rehabilitation Involve?

If you suspect a fracture or sprain, immediate first aid is typically recommended. This can help manage discomfort and swelling until you receive professional care. The RICE protocol is a widely used approach, and it stands for:

  • Rest: Keep weight off the injured ankle.
  • Ice: Apply ice packs at intervals to reduce swelling.
  • Compression: Wrap the ankle with a bandage for support.
  • Elevation: Raise the ankle above the level of your heart.

After first aid, seek an evaluation as soon as possible. Some practices offer prompt appointments for fractures and other injuries, so treatment can begin without delay. The right treatment depends on the type and severity of the break.

For fractures where the bones remain aligned, immobilization is a common first step. A walking boot or crutches may be used to hold the ankle steady while the bones heal back together. Oral anti-inflammatory medication can be recommended to help manage pain and swelling during recovery. When the bones have shifted out of place, a podiatrist may perform a fracture reduction. This procedure realigns the bones so they can heal in the correct position. In more serious cases, surgery may be needed.

Seek Care From a Podiatrist

Recovery from an ankle fracture depends on the diagnosis and steady follow-through. A podiatrist will monitor healing over time, and they can adjust your treatment as the bones mend. If you suspect an ankle fracture, prompt attention from a podiatrist supports proper healing and a gradual return to daily activities.
